Collaboration with the Hamilton- Glaucoma-Center, University of San Diego

von Georg Michelson (Erlangen), Joachim Hornegger (Erlangen)

1. Start of Project AUTOMATED GLAUCOMA SCREENING with University of San Diego (UCSD)

The Bayerisch-Kalifornische Hochschulzentrum supports the collaboration between the Interdisciplinary Center of Ophthalmic Preventive Medicine and Imaging of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (IZPI) and the Hamiliton Glaucoma Center of the University of San Diego (UCSD). Representatives of the Interdisciplinary Center of Ophthalmic Preventive Medicine and Imaging met in San Diego on 07th and 08th December 2009 for discussing a collaboration. The goals are based on improving the web-based glaucoma screening support prototype system developed by IZPI.
The system shall be tested on data by the UCSD and on data showing glaucoma progression for changes in the resulting index. Moreover an improvement of the system is planned to incorporate more parameters like disk size, rim paleness, vessels, age effects, etc. The output of the system will be improved by showing the papilla's segmented contour line and by adding a quality index for the final preprocessed image. The UCSD studies ADAGES and DIGS will be used to evaluate the system on their data sets.
During the whole collaboration both teams will share their databases.
As future work first a self learning module shall be included into the system, that evaluates the users' result modifications. Second an automated image acquisition system using a non-mydriatic fundus camera shall be developed to decrease the quality variance. Finally two post-doc or Ph.D. applicants shall be financed during the collaboration. Further details will be discussed in a meeting in Erlangen during March, when representatives of the Hamiliton Glaucoma Center of the University of San Diego (UCSD) will visit Erlangen.
